cgR – Episode #004 – “The Real 4th Show!”

“……i was gonna say you can’t expect every show to be a hit ….”

Howdy Do! If i apologized for the wait on the last episode then i really have to get on my knees here. Sorry, but its all Jonathan’s fault hehe. But hopefully that will be the last time for the near future where you haven’t got a show to entertain you.. or put you to sleep. :)

In this episode we begin with a semi-dissection of the interview we did with Richard. I brought up how amazed i was at the revelation that animation was part of the long term plan for wings, which lead me to briefly touch on an animation package that was written in LISP (a very similar language to Erlang) a few years ago. So for those of you who are interested to see how this thing worked right-click here (7.31mb).

Also with Siggraph going on right now we couldn’t, or should i say, I couldn’t resist talking about some of the revelations that were made during the first day of the event.

But our main story for this episode was Silo. More specifically the user reaction to a post made by the developers around 3 weeks ago (yeah i know, but we had this show planned out for a while it’s just we couldn’t get round to doing it).

And finally we ended with two plugs, one for a new one-to-one training site (Mavenseed) and i had to plug Wings3D since they implemented something i was very happy with.

So not the most jam packed episode but we wanted to get back into the swing of things with a lower profiled show. Our next show will be a chat i had with Eugene and then after that a more thorough wrapup of the Siggraph event so stay tuned/subscribed for that.

Enjoy.

I remember when face robot first came out and I was of course amazed. Later though, I never really heard much about it which I can only guess was due to so few people using it (cost being the deterrent). With its inclusion in Softimage 2010 I’ll wager we’re about to see a lot more face robot driven animations!

There are a few iphone game engines on the market, one that has full integration with blender as an development/output tool, SiO2. Then there are commercial engines, iTorque, Unity has an Iphone engine version, Shiva, and Bork3D are the ones I know of.

Just for the record, I bought a Silo license and did not really get on with it, it just lacks the sexy selection tools that I am used to. Wings3D on the other hand! Love it.

Eugene: Same here, although i think it missed the train a little bit because after seeing how they put Benjamin Button together. The area of facial mocap will be on the decline i think because of the lack of detail. but i agree that we will probably see a lot of facial animation and if its put in the right hands with the use of animated displacements then the results could be very detailed and expressive. I think it would be more fitting to the cartoony/Pixar animated style rather than a realistic human.

Redbeer: I wasn’t aware there was any. Straight away i’m thinking will they be able to grab developers away from those that have already been established.

Rezonance: Can’t please everyone :) , but your not wrong with moving over to wings. Selections are THE No.1 best thought out selection workflows around. Although in Silo you can get it to emulate it a little bit. With the mouse button config (only add to selection) and delselect with Spacebar but its not perfect. :)
